Madurai- ‘Athens of the East.’
Madurai has considered as the oldest city in India, located on the banks of river Vaigai. The metropolis city traded with ancient Rome dating back to 300 BC are evident from excavations by Archeological Survey of India in Manalur.
The city Madurai also was known as Madurai”, “Koodal”, “and Malligai Maanagar “,” Naanmadakoodal” and “Thirualavai”, the word Madurai derived from Madhura (sweetness), other believed that it is the derivative of word Marutham which refers to third Tamil Sangam. The city attracts tourist toward its filter coffees and famous historical temples like Meenakshi Amman Temple and Thirumalai Nayak Palace.
Madurai is the home of many automobiles industries, rubber, chemical and granite manufacturers industries and the hub of education centres in South India.
Culture and Cuisine: The South Indian people treat their guests like ‘Gods’, they are expert in hospitality and famous for their straightforward and delicious cuisines like Sambar, Idli, Dosa and Vada. The people cooked their food in pure coconut oil with little spices. The unique ingredients used in Madurai food are lettuce leaves, carrots, brinjals, potatoes, ladies finger, tomatoes and cauliflower. The delicious mouthwatering drinks of the city are Paruthi Pal, Jil Jil Jigarthanda and Ambatbath. Paruthi made from coconut, raw rice flour and jaggery.
